SAN DIEGO — The Sockers have signed defender Brian Schmetzer to a two-year contract and defender George Katakalidis to a one-year contract. Each player will be starting his fourth season with the Sockers.
Katakalidis, who was hampered by a sprained left toe, appeared in only 21 regular-season games last year and finished with 1 goal, 3 assists and 10 blocked shots. Schmetzer, voted the most-improved player on the team last season, finished second on the club in blocked shots with 48, scored 3 goals and had 3 assists in 42 regular-season games.
Bruce Binkowski, who has done public-address announcing for the Padres, Chargers and San Diego State, has signed a one-year agreement to serve as public address announcer for the Sockers during the 1987-88 season.
