TRACK AND FIELD : Manship’s Track Feats Worth Another First

It is probably the last award Sharon Manship will receive for her track and field exploits at Thousand Oaks High.
But for the Conejo Recreation and Park District, Manship represents a first. She’s the initial recipient of its Young Athlete of the Month award.
Manship, 17, will attend UCLA this fall on a partial track and field scholarship. She earned it.
Manship placed third in the triple jump and fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles at the 1987 state track and field championships in Sacramento.
And she was one of 25 athletes nationwide to compete in The Athletic Congress/USA Development Junior Elite Camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., last July.
Dr. Melvin Hayashi, a Thousand Oaks orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine, nominated Manship. Hayashi was one of five doctors assigned to the U.S. team at the Pan American Games.
The award was created by the district’s board of directors to recognize young Conejo Valley athletes. Manship will be awarded a medallion at tonight’s board meeting.
