The Chicago Black Hawks acquired right wings Rick Vaive and Steve Thomas and defenseman Bob McGill from Norris Division rival Toronto in exchange for left wing Al Secord and forward Eddie Olczyk.
The key players in the swap were Secord and Vaive.
Secord, 29, the only Black Hawk to score 50 goals in a season since Bobby Hull, had 29 goals last season. His best performance since joining Chicago in 1980 came in 1982-83, when he scored 54 goals.
Vaive, 28, is the only player in Toronto history to score 50 goals in a season. He has done so three times since joining the Leafs in a trade with Vancouver in 1979.
