Don Your Mouse Ears or Prepare to Beam Up

The Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention, Sunday at the Ambassador Hotel, should appeal to children for two reasons: Disney and “Star Trek.” Special guests will include Disney artist Daan Jippes and Richard Arnold, Paramount’s press liaison for the new “Star Trek: The Next Generation” television series, which begins its weekly run in October.

Jippes, who has illustrated Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Uncle Scrooge comics, will be there from noon to 2 p.m. to sign autographs, do some quick sketches and answer questions. Examples of his art will be on display.

The “Star Trek” segment begins at 2 p.m. with Arnold showing slides of the new series and talking about its stars and format.

“Paramount has kept a close watch on the show,” says convention producer Bruce Schwartz, “so we are really looking forward to this preview.”

The core of this monthly show is the 50-plus dealers who pile their tables with rare and not-so-rare comics for sale.

“There are some real bargains here,” Schwartz says. “Some are five for $1, so kids can definitely get into the buying.”

In an adjoining room, Schwartz will screen old television shows, cartoons and a reel of Star Trek bloopers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 3:15 p.m., a science-fiction movie will be screened. Visitors may move freely between the dealers’ room and the film room.

The convention takes place in the Ambassador-Sunset rooms of the hotel, 3400 Wilshire Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $1.75. Information: (818) 954-8432.
