CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Sophomore Torin Dorn, who became North Carolina’s starting tailback after Derrick Fenner was arrested on murder charges last June, led the Tar Heels to a 34-14 victory over Illinois Saturday.
Fenner, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher last season as a sophomore, is charged in a drug-related slaying in Upper Marlboro, Md. His case is scheduled to go to trial Oct. 26.
Meanwhile, North Carolina seems to have found a capable replacement in Dorn, who rushed for 165 yards in 15 carries and scored on runs of 4 and 56 yards.
The Fighting Illini took a 7-3 lead on fullback Jeff Markland’s 10-yard touchdown run with three minutes left in the first half, but Dorn’s first touchdown gave the Tar Heels the lead for good.
