Hundreds of demonstrators staged a peaceful rally in Chinandega, 50 miles northwest of Managua, Nicaragua, to demand that the left-wing Sandinista government restore constitutional rights, as advocated by a recently signed regional peace accord. Police with rubber truncheons stood by but did not interfere. At the rally, sponsored by the opposition Democratic Coordinate, speakers denounced press censorship and the wide powers given to police under an emergency law imposed to deal with attacks by U.S.-supported contras . A similar rally, held Aug. 15 in Managua, was broken up by police.
