Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson, the first Swedish head of government in 35 years to make an official visit to the United States, arrived in Boston for a personal visit before flying to Washington on Wednesday to meet with President Reagan. The trip signals a recovery in U.S.-Swedish relations, which came close to collapse 15 years ago after then-Prime Minister Olof Palme’s attacks against the Vietnam War and Sweden’s acceptance of 800 U.S. Army deserters. In 1972, Washington refused to accept the credentials of a new Swedish ambassador. Carlsson, 53, took office after the assassination of Palme in 1986.
