Golf Roundup : Sindelar Wraps Up B.C. Open With a 69

Joey Sindelar won the $400,000 B.C. Open golf tournament Sunday at Endicott, N.Y., with a final-round two-under-par 69, becoming the first golfer to repeat as champion in the event’s 16-year history.

The four-stroke victory was Sindelar’s first since he won the B.C. Open two years ago by one stroke. Sindelar, who failed to make the cut in the tournament last year, received $72,000.

Sindelar, who built an eight-stroke lead after two days following rounds of 65 and 63, sailed to an easy victory despite a late charge by Jeff Sluman.

Sindelar finished at 18-under-par 266 and, for a while, was at 19-under, threatening to match the best 72-hole total over the En-Joie Golf Club course, which was set by Calvin Peete, who carded a 265 on the way to the 1982 B.C. Open title.

Sluman shot a final-round 65.

At Lexington, Ky., Bruce Crampton, who played record golf the first two rounds, shot a par 70 on the final round to hold on for a six-stroke victory in the $225,000 Bank One Senior tournament.

Crampton started the day with a seven-stroke lead but faltered with a double-bogey on the second hole. He then parred 12 straight until scoring birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 to finish 13-under for the tournament.

Crampton posted rounds of 63-64 on the first two days at the Marriott’s Griffin Gate course for a PGA Senior Tour record on a par-70 course.

Crampton won $33,750 in his fifth victory on the senior tour this year and his 12th in two years, boosting his 1987 earnings to $331,571, second on the senior tour behind Chi Chi Rodriguez.

Bob Charles, who set a course record of 62 during a pro-am Thursday, shot a 65 Sunday but was assessed a two-stroke penalty for being two minutes late on the first tee and was dropped to a 67. He finished in a three-way tie for second with Miller Barber and Joe Jimenez.

Rosie Jones shot a three-under-par 69 to take the second-round lead at 138 in the $200,000 LPGA Rail Charity tournament.

Jones matched her opening-round score in the 54-hole tournament at Springfield, Ill., for a one-stroke lead over Mary Beth Zimmerman, Nancy Lopez and Kathy Postlewait.

Jones went through five consecutive holes on the front side without a par, getting three birdies and two bogeys on the way to one-under-par 35. She added two birdies on the back.

Zimmerman, the first-round leader at 67, had a 72 Sunday, while Lopez and Postlewait had 71s.

Anders Forsbrand of Sweden shot a record-breaking 62 to win the $600,000 European Masters at Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

He broke a European Tour record with 10 birdies and an eagle for a 25-under-par 263 on the Crans-sur-Sierre course.

Forsbrand, who won $90,000, finished three strokes ahead of Britain’s Mark Mouland, who shot a 65 and earned $60,000.

Masters champion Larry Mize finished 14 strokes back at 277 after a 70, and U.S. Open champion Scott Simpson shot a 69 for 272.
