Denny McLain, former Detroit Tigers pitching star, spent his first day out of prison with his family Saturday at their home in Tampa, Fla.
McLain, 43, woke his family at sunrise, cooked them breakfast, went grocery shopping with his wife for the second time in 23 years of marriage and watched television.
“I didn’t sleep much,” McLain said. “The excitement.”
McLain was released Friday night from a Talladega, Ala., prison, where he served 2 1/2 years for racketeering, extortion and drug charges. He was serving a 23-year term but an Atlanta Circuit Court of Appeals ruled he was denied a fair trial because of errors made by a U.S. district judge and federal prosecutors.
McLain was released on $200,000 bond pending a government decision on whether to order a retrial.
