The weekend death toll of bottle-nosed dolphins on the New Jersey shoreline rose to eight as three new carcasses were found near Brigantine. More than 250 of the animals have washed ashore along the mid-Atlantic coast this summer. Biologists said all but one of the latest victims bore skin lesions common to carcasses found earlier. Some scientists speculate that the lesions are caused by water pollution and that bacteria enter the animals through the broken skin, bringing on fatal infections.
