NEW DELHI — At least eight worshipers of Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu deity, drowned in the Arabian Sea in western India during an immersion ceremony, United News of India reported Monday.
The tragedy occurred late Sunday when thousands of worshipers gathered by the sea at Ubharat, about 870 miles southwest of New Delhi, to mark the end of the 10-day Hindu festival.
Hindus in western India worship Ganesh by placing thousands of clay idols at homes, street corners and at temples. The idols are then immersed after the festival.
