The latest misadventure in television’s coverage of the U.S. Open came Monday when CBS left the air with Henri Leconte leading Jimmy Connors in the fourth set of Connors’ 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory. CBS’s Brent Musburger advised viewers to tune into the “CBS Evening News” for the final results.
CBS said it had to sign off from the telecast, shown live in the East and on a two-hour delay in the West, because it was 6 p.m. in the East. It was 5 p.m. PDT when CBS cut away. Channel 2 in Los Angeles showed local news.
Last week, the USA cable network cut away from several exciting matches.
