The leftist Sandinista government said it released two jailed human rights activists into the custody of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), in appreciation of his “efforts to improve relations” between the United States and Nicaragua. Harkin, a staunch opponent of U.S. aid to the contras , came to Managua to express support for a Central American peace plan. Harkin visited the jailed opposition leaders, Lino Hernandez Trigueros and Alberto Saborio, but details of their release were not known. Hernandez Trigueros, president of the Permanent Human Rights Commission, and Alberto Saborio, president of the Nicaraguan Bar Assn., were arrested Aug. 15 for organizing an anti-government protest.
