LONDON — Two buses, one of them carrying American tourists, crashed today in a multi-vehicle pileup on an expressway near Heathrow Airport. Police said four people were killed and 75 injured.
The pileup occurred at 1:45 p.m. on the M4 Motorway, a six-lane highway between London and Heathrow and western England. Wreckage spilled over to the other side of the highway, causing long traffic jams.
Police helicopters flew in paramedics, and 10 ambulances ferried casualties to three hospitals.
An Angel Motors bus involved in the crash was carrying 47 tourists, many of them Americans, on a day trip from London to Windsor Castle on the outskirts of the capital.
The second bus, operated by the British company National Express, was carrying 46 passengers from Penzance in southwestern England to London.
