The way has been cleared for construction of two stadiums in downtown Baltimore without having to go to a public vote.

A 6-1 decision by Maryland’s highest court reversed a decision by a lower court judge, who had blocked the stadium bills so voters could decide at the 1988 general election whether to build a sports complex at Camden Yards. Now there is no need for a vote.

Neither stadium can be built, however, until the state has a signed long-term lease with the owner of a football or baseball franchise. If both stadiums are built, the project is estimated to cost more than $200 million.
