Controversial Nominee for Appeals Court OKd

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Wednesday approved, 87 to 0, the controversial nomination of U.S. District Judge David B. Sentelle of North Carolina to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
The nomination of Sentelle, 44, of Asheville, N.C., was held up after the Senate Judiciary Committee approved it in April because he is a member of the Masons, an organization that Sen. Paul Simon (D-Ill.) said practiced “invidious discrimination.”
Sentelle, who was appointed to the U.S. District Court for western North Carolina in 1985 after eight years in private law practice, will take the appeals court seat left vacant when Antonin Scalia was elevated to the U.S. Supreme Court.
