Contempt’s Fast Finish Wins Del Mar Feature

DEL MAR — Favored Contempt, ridden by Laffit Pincay, moved to the lead in the final furlong and won by 1 lengths in Wednesday’s $53,550 Rancho Santa Fe Stakes for 2-year-olds at Del Mar.
Running Over, with Alex Solis up, finished second a half-length in front of No Commitment, ridden by Russell Baze, in a field of six juveniles.
Contempt fell back to last after the start and began his rally under right-hand pressure from Pincay with a quarter-mile to run. He forged to the lead in the final sixteenth and won drawing away.
Contempt raced six furlongs in 1:09 3-5 and earned $31,050. The son of Stormbird is owned by Eugene Klein and trained by Wayne Lukas.
Sent off the 2-1 choice, Contempt paid $6 to win.
