The puckish choreographer Mark Morris and his New York-based company have been selected to replace Maurice Bejart’s Ballet of the 20th Century as the resident dance company at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. Gerard Mortier, the theater’s director, said the signing of Morris should be completed early next week. “It was love at first sight,” commented Mortier after viewing Morris’ work on the John Adams opera “Nixon in China” earlier this year. Morris’ three-year contract with the theater calls for a six-month residency by the company each year, with an annual budget of $1.5 million.
