The French film “Au Revoir, les Enfants” (“Goodbye, Children”), directed by Louis Malle, has won the Golden Lion first prize at the 44th Venice International Film Festival. The film, which describes the persecution of Jewish children in France during World War II, was enthusiastically received by critics and public at the festival. The second-prize Silver Lion was shared by Italian director Ermanno Olmi’s “Lunga Vita alla Signora” (“Long Life to the Lady”) and “Maurice” by director James Ivory, based on a novel by English author E. M. Forster.
