Papa might have growled about it, but film makers, looking for a stand-in for Cuba, cast Puerto Rico in the role as filming began on a six-hour television miniseries about Ernest Hemingway, starring Stacy Keach as the writer. Part of the joint U.S.-German production (called “Hemingway”) is being shot in Puerto Rico because production officials and the government of Cuba, where Hemingway lived part of his life, could not reach an agreement. The producers said Hemingway’s Cuban home, maintained as a museum by the Cuban government, had been virtually duplicated in Puerto Rico.
