MANAMA, Bahrain — U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar arrived in Tehran today to try to arrange a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War.
Neither Iraq nor Iran reported attacks on Persian Gulf shipping or new combat in the hours after his arrival, indicating that they may observe a cease-fire during Perez de Cuellar’s peace mission to the region.
Perez de Cuellar arrived in Tehran at 7:20 p.m. after a flight from Paris and was greeted by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and senior officials, Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
The U.N. chief will also visit Baghdad in a bid to win implementation of a Security Council resolution calling for a cease-fire in the 7-year-old war.
