8,200 Workers Strike 2 Belgrade Factories

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — About 8,200 workers in two Belgrade factories walked off the job Thursday to protest low pay and a drop in living standards, the state Tanjug news agency reported.
A source at the IMR engine factory, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that about 5,000 employees were striking for a pay boost to match inflation, which stood at 118% last month.
An additional 3,200 workers of the FOM metal plant went on strike to press their demand for a 60% wage boost, Tanjug said.
About 1,700 workers of TAS, the Volkswagen auto assembly plant in Sarajevo, returned to work Thursday after a three-day strike. They were promised a 20% pay raise.
