Ted Brown returned a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns and had two interceptions Thursday night to lead Katella High School to a 42-6 nonleague victory over Magnolia in the season opener for both at Anaheim’s Glover Stadium.
Brown, a 5-foot 10-inch, 155-pound senior wide receiver and defensive back, returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and returned a punt 76 yards for a score.
Brown’s first interception helped set up Jeff Yourstone’s touchdown run. Brown’s other interception stopped a Sentinel drive at the Katella two-yard line.
Katella’s new coach, Larry Anderson, unveiled the veer offense, which proved to be effective on the first drive. The Knights drove 65 yards on 14 plays with Joe Pasporello scoring on a one-yard run.
Later in the first quarter, Jeremy Sherman blocked a Magnolia punt and on the next play rushed eight yards for a touchdown.
Magnolia’s only score came when Jody Clark scored to cap a 12-play, 67-yard drive.
