Community College Roundup : Golden West Wins Opener in Volleyball

Laura Phillips had 27 kills and Barrie Dafforn had 57 assists as the Golden West women’s volleyball team defeated Cuesta, 12-15, 15-12, 15-11, 10-15, 15-9, in a nonconference match at Cuesta Friday night. It was the season opener for both teams.
In men’s nonconference soccer:
Orange Coast 3, Golden West 3--Mazen Zakarai scored on a penalty kick with 17 minutes remaining to help Golden West gain a tie at Orange Coast.
The Pirates, led by John Banetas (two goals) and Julian Dos Santos (one), scored three times in the first five minutes. Ed Gurzi and Kirk Lundberg provided a goal each for the Rustlers.
Fullerton 2, Rancho Santiago 1--Frank Ayala and Jeff Gordon each scored in the second half to lead the Hornets at Fullerton.
