S.F. to Fight Order to Include Ban on Gay Bias in Stadium Contract for Mass

SAN FRANCISCO — The city will fight a judge’s order that a clause banning discrimination against homosexuals be included in the contract covering Pope John Paul II’s Mass at Candlestick Park on Friday.

“We plan to oppose the order,” Deputy City Atty. Mora Rosales said Friday after the order was issued by Superior Court Judge Daniel Hanlon in response to a suit by a homosexual group.

The judge ordered the city and the Archdiocese of San Francisco to include the anti-discrimination clause in the stadium rental contract or present its case against doing so by Thursday, the day before the scheduled Mass.

The suit was filed by the Council on Religion and the Homosexual. Group spokesman John Wahl said the city’s non-discrimination ordinance mandates that all city contracts include such a clause.
