Memory Book Photo of Gays
I was delighted to read that the Irvine University High School reunion committee had decided that a photograph of a graduate and his gay lover should be included in its reunion memory book. Co-chairs Valerie Smith and Beverly Nelson and their committee are to be applauded for standing up for the rights of their classmate.
The publishing firm’s owner, Dan Worthington, who refuses to publish the photograph, clearly is violating the civil rights of David Engel and his partner, Eric Underwood. It’s hard to believe that Worthington would attempt to defend such a blatant act of discrimination.
I am pleased that Engel is taking the case to court and I encourage him to persevere in seeking a judgment that will demonstrate that California no longer tolerates such bigotry.
