Budget Surplus in Costa Mesa

So you think residents of Costa Mesa should vote to allow the city to keep a $2.1-million surplus (Aug. 17). Interesting.
The City Council is voted into office to manage a budget that properly answers the city’s needs, not to attempt to cash in on a once-in-a-lifetime surplus. Public works projects should be addressed so that they don’t become “badly needed public works projects.”
If they would scrap the gratuitously expensive public surveillance and annoyance system they call a “police helicopter,” they would have very near that $2.1 million every year. Most interesting, however, was that your editorial failed to mention that The Times operates an Orange County bureau in an increasingly impacted area of Costa Mesa.
Your staff stands to directly benefit from the proposals you are urging us residents to approve. You scratch the City Council’s back, and they scratch yours? Come November, I’ll scratch the backs of Costa Mesa residents, and vote to return to them what’s theirs.
