Kissinger on Nicaragua

Forty-five years ago I enlisted in the Marine Corps to fight fascism. I left some good buddies in the lagoon at Tarawa and in the jungles of Saipan. Ten thousand miles away it was a different war, but against the same fascism.
The dictionary defines fascism as “a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation above the individual and stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.” By this definition both Fidel Castro’s Cuba and Daniel Ortega’s Nicaragua are fascist!
Forty-five years ago I fought to defeat fascism. I have always though that we won. But apparently I am wrong. The vast majority of letters that you print are in support of the fascist governments of Cuba and Nicaragua. I assume that this is typical (i.e., a valid cross-section of your readers). It saddens me to find all these sacrifices are in vain. But today I am an old man and can fight no more!
