A suspected drunken driver was seriously injured early Sunday when his car veered off the San Diego Freeway and crashed into a car parked on the shoulder, authorities said.
Jose P. Sanchez, 27, of San Juan Capistrano was taken to Mission Community Hospital Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where he was listed in serious condition with severe spleen and pancreas injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Sanchez was traveling north at unknown speed on I-5 when he left the freeway just south of Oso Parkway at 3:35 a.m. and struck a disabled Chevrolet Camaro stopped on the shoulder, the California Highway Patrol said.
No one was in the Camaro at the time of the collision, the CHP dispatcher said.
Sanchez, who was not wearing a seat belt, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, CHP officers said.
