Roh Meets Reagan, Tells of ‘Political Miracle’ in S. Korea

WASHINGTON — President Reagan met today with Roh Tae Woo, the leader of South Korea’s ruling party, but the White House said that it was not an endorsement and that Reagan would welcome visits by opposition candidates in the country’s upcoming election.
After the 15-minute discussion, Roh told reporters that he informed Reagan and Vice President George Bush that his country is about to make “a very successful transition into a more mature democracy.”
“I told him a political miracle is now happening in Korea. . . . We are going to have a very fair and open (presidential) election in December,” Roh said.
Asked about Korean perceptions that the meeting constituted an endorsement, presidential spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said, “It is not an endorsement and we do not want it perceived that way.” He also said other Korean political leaders are welcome, although no such meetings are scheduled.
