President Reagan met with Roh Tae Woo, the leader of South Korea’s ruling party, but the White House said it was not an endorsement and Reagan would welcome visits by opposition candidates in South Korea’s presidential election in December. White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the meeting with Roh “symbolizes our firm and unequivocal support for Korea’s democratization process.” He added: “We will, of course, welcome future visits by major Korean political leaders from either camp.” However, no such meetings are scheduled, Fitzwater said.
