An apologetic John McEnroe said he hasn’t decided whether to appeal a two-month suspension and $17,850 in fines levied against him during the U.S. Open tennis championships, although he said he felt that he will.

McEnroe received the suspension and $17,500 in fines after three separate warnings for cursing during his third-round victory Aug. 5 over Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia. He received a $350 fine in an earlier match.

“I don’t think the odds are good, but I hope that I can win the appeal and at least get my fines reduced,” McEnroe said. “I do feel that what I did was a mistake. However, I don’t think I should have been suspended two months for it.

“I’d say it doesn’t look like I have a whole lot of sympathy on this.”
