Panel OKs Verity for Cabinet

WASHINGTON — The Senate Commerce Committee brushed aside conservative opposition today and approved the nomination of former steel executive C. William Verity Jr. to be commerce secretary.
The 17-1 vote sent the nomination to the Senate floor where confirmation is expected in the next couple of days. Only Sen. Bob Kasten (R-Wis.) voted against Verity, 70, who would succeed Malcolm Baldrige, who died after being crushed by his horse in a July rodeo accident. Some conservative groups have lobbied against Verity because of his longtime support of increased trade with the Soviet Union.
