India’s best-known film director, Satyajit Ray, returned to film-making in Calcutta on Wednesday, three years after a heart attack that nearly killed him. He began directing a state-sponsored 30-minute documentary on his father Sukumar Ray, a well-known Bengali poet and illustrator. The director, who won international acclaim for his “Apu Trilogy” of films depicting Indian village life, was partially paralyzed by a severe heart attack in 1984, later undergoing surgery in the United States.
