David Brown, superintendent of San Marino Unified School District since 1980, has announced that he will resign on Nov. 1 to become superintendent of the Irvine Unified School District.
School board President Selma Sax said the board expects to name Brown’s successor at its Tuesday meeting. . She declined to name the person being considered for the post.
Unlike most districts that fill a top position by advertising nationally, Sax said, “We feel we have a strong staff and we could search far and wide and not do better than looking in our own house.”
Brown will leave a district with a declining enrollment of 2,750 students for a growing district with 21,000 students. His salary in San Marino is $71,300 a year. He said his salary in Irvine is being negotiated.
