The Montebello City Council has voted unanimously to hire an attorney to defend a city bus driver against possible charges that negligence led to the death of a 3-year-old girl who was caught in the doors of his bus and dragged along the street.
The city hired lawyer F. A. de la Pena to defend veteran bus driver George C. Schacht in case the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office charges Schacht with vehicular manslaughter in connection with the May 5 accident, City Administrator Joseph M. Goeden said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Dist. Atty. Gerald G. Haney said this week that a decision is pending on whether to charge Schacht.
Sylvia de Luna of Montebello was on an errand with her grandmother when she tried to exit at a bus stop. She was caught in the bus doors and dragged 25 feet along the ground. The girl died of multiple injuries 10 days later.
