Whittier : Arts Center Permit Granted
The Whittier Planning Commission has approved a site plan and granted a conditional-use permit allowing Whittier College to begin construction of an $8-million performing arts center.
The arts center is estimated to be about 30,000 square feet. It will involve the relocation of three other college buildings. Construction can begin after a 20-day appeal period expires Sept. 28, but college officials have said the ground breaking will be later this year or early in 1988.
Plans for the two-level center on the corner of Painter Avenue and Philadelphia Street include a 500-seat main theater and a smaller experimental theater. Construction is expected to take 18 to 24 months.
