The Papal Visit : Papal Digest : Father Guido Sarducci Shows Up

Of course, the gossip columnist for L’Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican newspaper, would be expected to cover the Pope’s visit to Los Angeles. So it was not really much of a surprise when Father Guido Sarducci of “Saturday Night Live” fame showed up while Pope John Paul II spoke to students at the Universal Amphitheater on Tuesday.
Actually, actor Don Novello said he was videotaping segments for a cable TV comedy special. Still, he came armed with a media pass and camera crew as well as a phony cardinal in his entourage. Novello, dressed in his usual priest-like costume, did a few impromptu interviews with spectators and amphitheater employees. One woman asked him to have the Pope bless her lottery tickets.
“We could really use the money,” she said.
“So could I,” Novello quipped.
