Computer Crash Delays Traffic at Heathrow Airport

LONDON — The main computer at London’s Air Traffic Control Center broke down for more than three hours Thursday, forcing delays and diverting flights at one of the world’s busiest airports.
A software problem triggered the computer crash at 4:51 a.m., hitting London’s Heathrow Airport at a peak period for long-haul arrivals, a Civil Aviation Authority spokesman said.
He insisted there was no danger but said that four flights were diverted to Brussels, Geneva, Athens and Paris and that the disruption would lead to delays throughout the day.
The computer at West Drayton, just north of Heathrow, controls all civilian air traffic movement in England and Wales.
