Food for 4 Stretched for 211 Refugees

BANGKOK, Thailand — More than 200 Vietnamese refugees were put ashore safely in Thailand on Thursday by a Danish captain who had to stretch rations meant for four people to feed his starving guests for three days after rescuing them from a drifting boat.
Many of the 211 refugees wept with emotion and relief as they said goodby and thanked captain Pall Jensen, who plucked them from their 35-foot boat after they had drifted for 11 days in the South China Sea. When Jensen picked up the 211, he had food and water for himself and his crew of three for six days.
The group, the largest to arrive by sea in Thailand for several years, was taken from the freighter Alice Riis to a refugee center at Panas Nikom southeast of Bangkok to await resettlement in third countries.
