Blackmun Prognosis ‘Excellent’

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun today completed outpatient treatment for a recurrence of prostate cancer and a Mayo Clinic spokeswoman said “The prognosis is excellent.”
Blackmun, 78, author of the landmark 1973 ruling legalizing abortion, underwent surgery for prostate cancer Nov. 14, 1977. The Mayo Clinic announced July 21 that Blackmun was undergoing treatment for “a small and localized recurrence.”
