MILAN, Italy — Paced by Kevin Magee’s 29 points, Maccabi of Tel Aviv defeated Zalgiris Kaunas of the Soviet Union, 109-107, Thursday in the Intercontinental Cup basketball tournament.
Magee, formerly of UC Irvine, and fellow Americans Ken Barlow (22 points) and Willie Sims (21) sparked a Maccabi charge that gave the Israeli team a 91-81 lead with eight minutes to play.
The victory gives the Israeli team--a finalist in the European Cup of Champions last season--four points from three games in Group B of the eight-team competition, keeping alive its hopes to qualify for Saturday’s semifinals. The top two teams in two round-robin groups make the semifinals.
