Having already proven it is the best in Southern California, the Oakridge Tennis Club will take on the nation, beginning today in Las Vegas.
Playing in the USTA/Volvo Tennis League at the 3.5 skill level, the nine amateurs from Oakridge finished first in their Simi Valley-area league, then won the six-team Southern California sectional competition at UCLA early last month to qualify for this weekend’s Volvo nationals. In the sectional final, Oakridge beat Flint Canyon, 3-2.
Team tennis competition ranges from novice (2.5) to advanced (5.0).
Don Beckendorf is the captain of the Oakridge team, which includes Jason Whittington, John Locke, Art Ford, Frank Robertson, John Wolfe, Mike Kalinke, Dixon Grier and David Robertson.
Seventeen teams will compete in the nationals in a round-robin format. The finals are scheduled for Sunday.
