Band Leader Herman’s Problems With the IRS

It seems like compassion and caring for your fellow man is being ground under by selfishness and just plain greed. Perhaps it’s a sign of the times or an example set by President Reagan of stepping on the poor and needy and showing great zeal in helping the rich and the greedy.

I am referring to former Big Band leader Woody Herman and the man that got his home for a song from the Internal Revenue Service. Fortunately, all the notoriety brought people who know Herman professionally or otherwise to his aid.

But what if it had been an old and sick ordinary, unknown citizen? That landlord would have thrown him out no matter how old and sick that person would be. According to the media (Metro, Sept. 9), the landlord said he didn’t know it was Woody Herman who he was throwing out. What’s the difference? He was a human being. Where is that man’s conscience?
