A transient allegedly robbed a wheelchair-bound man of his wallet and then slashed the victim’s face with a knife, Santa Monica police said Thursday.
The transient, who told police his name is Jerry Ossie Ford, 44, allegedly walked into a business at 1011 Pico Blvd. and demanded money from Ralph Spears, a paraplegic, Lt. Jim Dawson said.
Ford took Spears’ wallet, containing about $60, and then stuck a five-inch knife in Spears’ cheek and pulled it across his face, Dawson said.
Ford was arrested when a police officer spotted him walking near the scene. He was carrying about $60 and a wooden-bladed knife and later led the officer to Spears’ discarded wallet, Dawson said. He was booked for investigation of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, Dawson said.
Spears, 58, was treated at a hospital and released.
