Orange County College Roundup : UCI Wins 2 in Water Polo Tournament

UC Irvine opened its season Friday with a pair of victories in the 21st annual Irvine water polo tournament at Irvine’s Heritage Park.
Mike Halphide and Tony Bell scored two goals each as second-ranked UCI defeated the University of the Pacific, 10-2, in the round-robin tournament.
In the second game, Greg Wilson scored three goals and Bell added a pair as the Anteaters defeated USC, 6-3.
UCI plays today at 2:30 and 7:10 p.m. in the championship round of the tournament that features the top 10 ranked teams in the coaches’ poll. Irvine’s opponents will be determined when the first round, which continues this morning starting at 7:30, is completed.
Top-ranked California won both its first-round games. Cal defeated Claremont-Mudd, 14-1, and UC Santa Barbara, 8-4.
In other first-round games: Stanford defeated Loyola Chicago, 9-3, and Pepperdine, 11-9. Cal State Long Beach defeated UCLA, 8-7.
In other water polo action:
Redlands 14, Chapman 8--Senior Woody Harter and freshman Brian Cummings scored three goals each for the Panthers (1-0). Dave Langan had seven goals for Redlands (1-0).
In women’s volleyball:
UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--Yami Menendez had 19 kills and Judy Bellomo added 14 to lift the 16th-ranked Gauchos (1-0, 9-3) past the Titans, 15-9, 3-15, 15-6, 15-8, in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. play at Titan Gym. Sophomore outside hitter Susan Herman, of La Habra High School, had 12 kills, and freshman hitter Keri Pier added 10 for the Titans (0-1, 7-5), who will play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Idaho State 3, Chapman 1--The Panthers (0-3) were defeated, 16-14, 15-2, 11-15, 15-2, in their first pool-play match at the BYU Invitational at Provo, Utah.
Utah 3, Chapman 1--The Panthers were defeated, 16-14, 13-15, 15-11, 16-14, in their second match of pool play.
In men’s soccer:
Cal State Fullerton 1, Santa Clara 0--Senior midfielder Tom Atencio’s unassisted goal from 20 yards out with two minutes left in the second overtime lifted the Titans (3-2) to a victory on the first day of the Titan/Coors MBF soccer invitational at Titan Field. Freshman goaltender Bryan Fisher, of Villa Park High School, recorded his second shutout. The Titans will meet New Mexico Sunday at 4 p.m. Santa Clara falls to 3-3.
New Mexico 2, UC Irvine 0--Goals by Alan Martin and Chris Rodefer lifted the Lobos to a first-game victory at the Titan invitational. Irvine is 2-3, and New Mexico 5-2. The Lobos will play Santa Clara Sunday at 2 p.m.
Chapman 2, Master’s 0--Junior forward Mauricio Musiet scored a goal at the 4:53 mark and had an assist to lead the Panthers (3-2) at Orange. Rick Snyder scored the Panthers’ other goal on a header at the 29:12 mark.
