ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Bolsa Grande Runs to Victory, 33-23 : Lepule, Lui Each Score Twice Against Long Beach Wilson

Times Staff Writer

Running backs Ricky Lepule and Travon Lui combined to score four touchdowns Friday as Bolsa Grande High School spoiled the season opener for host Long Beach Wilson with a 33-23 victory at Stephens Field.

The Matadors, ranked second in the Southern Section’s Central Conference and sixth in Orange County, equaled last week’s 33 points, scored in a shutout over Gahr. The defending conference champions have now won 11 consecutive games over two seasons.

The teams combined for 812 yards in total offense, Bolsa Grande holding the edge on the ground, 265-251, but Wilson leading in passing, 149-147, and first downs (22-13).

But the Bruins hurt their own cause several times. Wilson fumbled five times and Bolsa Grande recovered three of them, each time thwarting sustained drives.

Wilson was also penalized 10 times for 100 yards, including five personal fouls. Lepule staked the Matadors to a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter with scoring runs of 90 and 7 yards.

Wilson cut that lead to 14-6 on a nine-yard touchdown run by fullback Monteo Demery with 7:49 to go in the second quarter.

Then it was Lui’s turn. With 3:50 left in the half, the two-way starter recovered a Bruin fumble at the Wilson 35. Three plays later he swept around left end for his first touchdown of the game.

Bolsa extended its lead to 27-7 with 9:27 left in the third quarter on a 47-yard touchdown pass play from Damon Fisher to Jim Usey.

Wilson retaliated on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Scott Long six minutes later, but then Fisher hit Lui with a 30-yard scoring toss.
