San Diego High School Football : Bigger Mount Miguel Makes Big Plays, 22-0

Mount Miguel’s defense, known last year as the Thunder Midgets because it was stocked with little guys who made big plays, has some bigger players this year. And the bigger guys are still making big plays.

Haywood Mathis, a 6-foot 3-inch, 195-pound outside linebacker, and Adam Wilson, a 6-foot, 198-pound inside linebacker, made the biggest plays Friday night as the fourth-ranked Matadors defeated 10th-ranked Madison, 22-0, in a nonleague game at Mount Miguel.

Mathis sacked Madison quarterback Brad Eaddy for a second-quarter safety and Wilson blocked a punt to set up Anthony Rivera’s one-yard touchdown run as Mount Miguel took an 8-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Matador defense protected the lead with seven sacks.

Meanwhile, Mount Miguel expanded its lead when Anthony Williams scored on a 36-yard run and Rivera threw a 21-yard scoring pass to Frank Davis.

In all, Mount Miguel’s defense had 10 sacks and limited Eaddy, Madison’s quarterback, to 121 yards passing on 9 completions in 21 attempts.

Robert Griffith, a 5-9, 153-pound cornerback, provided a link with last year’s midget defense by intercepting three passes. Griffith’s first interception came in the end zone and stopped a Madison drive that had reached the Mount Miguel 11.
