Head-On Crash Kills Sylmar Motorcyclist

A Sylmar man was killed when his motorcycle slammed head-on into a pickup truck east of Santa Paula, the California Highway Patrol reported Saturday.
Mark Eugene Purves, 23, was traveling about 70 m.p.h. on South Mountain Road on Friday when he entered a curve marked for 30 m.p.h., a CHP spokesman said.
Purves’ cycle crossed into the opposite lane, hitting a westbound truck driven by Mitchell Szwed, 32, of Moorpark. Purves was pronounced dead at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital at 6:45 p.m. Szwed was not injured.
Earlier Friday, a Thousand Oaks man was killed when his car ran off the Ventura Freeway south of Camarillo Springs and fell 300 feet down the side of a mountain, the spokesman said.
Jeffrey Braaten, 26, was traveling north at 60 m.p.h. when he ran off the road and through a chain-link fence at 10:30 a.m., the CHP said. Braaten suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks.
