Beijing Chides Shops That Favor Foreigners

From Reuters

Shops that bar their doors to Chinese customers and serve only foreign tourists are “injuring national dignity,” the official Communist Party newspaper People’s Daily said Saturday.

The newspaper said arts and crafts stores in Xian, the site of the ancient terra cotta warriors and a major tourist stop, discriminate against local people in order to earn foreign exchange from overseas visitors.

“As soon as we set foot in these shops we hear a shout of ‘No admission,’ a front-page commentary said. “Signs in English say, ‘Welcome, Please Enter,’ as if to keep Chinese people out.”

The newspaper said it is right for shops to try to earn precious foreign currency but not at the expense of national dignity and people’s feelings.
